The neon/pastel palette of this group of still-life paintings imposes importance on the subjects within. The background color of the smaller pieces signifies the artificiality of the objects in the accompanying larger pieces that disrupt the scene. Man-made products interrupt the scene and show what is distracting in the landscape. The man-made products, also, influence the landscape’s meaning by interrupting the peaceful and tranquil qualities of the scene.
The intrusion of man-made objects breaks the illusion of these ornamental landscape paintings. Impressionist movement in the larger landscape pieces contrasts with the painterly quality of the smaller still life pieces.
For me, the man-made interruption of the serene still life is an analogy for the interruption that adjusting to life during and after the Covid pandemic has brought to my own peace and serenity. This work is my contemplation of change.
